IRC is a public, real-time system. Assume channel messages and public profile information may be logged by other participants.

Protect the account

• Use a unique X password.
• Never disclose a verification answer or email token.
• Authenticate only to X@channels.undernet.org.
• Check identities with /whois and /msg X VERIFY nickname; a familiar nickname alone proves nothing.

Protect the connection

After logging in to X, supported clients can request Undernet host hiding with:

/mode yournickname +x

Confirm the result with /whois yournickname. Host hiding reduces casual exposure but does not replace device security.

Treat DCC files and unsolicited links as untrusted. Keep your IRC client updated, disable unnecessary scripts, and never run commands pasted by a stranger without understanding them.
